JSO officers with JIW Girls

The girls of the JIW program had a workshop topic on drug and alcohol awareness on October 25, 2025. This interactive workshop had the girls asking lots of insightful questions. Below is a blog written by JIW girl Jazara M. who shares her experience during the workshop session.

On Saturday October 25th two female officers from Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) came out and talked to us about alcohol and drug awareness. During the activity, we did two different exercises that helped us understand the effects and dangers of drugs and alcohol.  We were also able to hold a drug kit. The kit contained items that showed what certain drugs look like and how they might be used. It was interesting to actually see the kinds of things that are often talked about.

We put on “drunk goggles” and tried to walk in a straight line, heel to heel, along a piece of tape on the floor. The goggles simulated what it feels like to be under the influence of alcohol. This is really hard to do. Lastly, we got to role-play how different people react to getting pulled over by the police. Some people acted calm and respectful, while others got defensive and disrespectful. This showed me how important it is to stay calm, be honest, and follow directions in those situations.

Overall, these activities taught me a lot of life skills about responsibility, decision-making, and the real effects that drugs and alcohol can have on people’s lives.
