Empowerment Resources, Inc. engaged approximately 25 girls in a five-day STEM Summer Series from July 27- July 31, 2026 from 9am-4pm daily. This Summer Series was designed to increase STEM exposure, expand career awareness, and help participants see themselves as future leaders and professionals in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The series intentionally combined hands-on activities, interactive learning, career conversations, and field experiences to demonstrate that STEM extends beyond traditional classroom subjects and connects to health, beauty, technology, aviation, cybersecurity, robotics, fitness, and entrepreneurship.
The series opened with “The Science of Body and Mind,” led by Soyini Circles, which introduced participants to the connections between physical health, mental well-being, and science. Girls also participated in gardening with the FAMU Extension office and fitness activities facilitated by Body Paradox, as well as and an inspiring lunch speaker from Paula D. Wright with DCP.
On Day 2, participants took part in STEM rotations focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Girls engaged directly with women working in STEM-related careers and participated in hands-on activities designed to make each field accessible and relevant. The day also featured a STEM career panel with women representing fields such as aviation, technology, science, information technology, and mathematics. A particularly meaningful addition was the participation of a former Journey Into Womanhood participant, Skylar D. who is now pursuing a science major at LSU, allowing current participants to see a relatable example of a JIW girl continuing her education and pursuing a STEM pathway.
Day 3 demonstrated how STEM can be found in creative and unexpected places through “The Science of Scent,” presented by Jones and Rose, explored the science behind fragrance and each girl was able to create and name their own fragrance. “The Science of Hair,” was presented by Texture Crush where the girls explored the science behind hair, and hair products before using science to determine their own hair velocity. The day ended with the girls participating in a modified “Shark Tank” hair product challenge.
On Day 4, the girls traveled to FSCJ’s Downtown Campus Advanced Technical Center, for hands-on experiences in robotics, technology, and science, along with a college tour and admissions experience.
On the final day, participants engaged with Carrie’s Kids and earned a Junior Security Analyst certificate introducing cybersecurity. The series concluded with an awards and celebration activity recognizing the girls’ participation and accomplishments, followed by line and hip-hop dancing. Parents were invited to attend the close out celebration with over 80% in attendance.
